In recent years, the Netherlands has strategically leveraged its International Cultural Policy (ICP) to strengthen regional ties with Japan, a partnership exemplified by cultural collaboration programs such as Holland-Kyushu (2016-2017), Holland-Kyoto (2019-2020), and NL-Kanto (2021-2023).

Join us for an event where our junior researcher on contemporary Japan, Beste Sevindik, will discuss the impact of such initiatives on relations between Japan and the Netherlands. The presentation will share insights from four case studies: ‘arita/2016’, ‘Fuji Textile Week’, ‘Shibaura House’, and ‘The Game Changer Project Tokyo’. With the World Expo 2025 in Osaka on the horizon, understanding the impact and legacy of these cultural connections is more important than ever. How do these initiatives, supported by the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo, build long-term partnerships with regional governments, cultural funds, local organisations, and the private sector? What are the implications of these collaborations and initiatives for their stakeholders and participants? How do these projects resonate within their respective communities?
