The new scramble for Africa

As China’s influence in Africa grows, there seems to be increasing anxiety among Western countries about upping their game in the continent. After China, many countries have designed their own Africa strategy. The Dutch government also recently published its own, first ever Africa strategy.

This month’s LAC Asia Academy looks at China’s influence in Africa and how it is perceived in the region. In the West, competition for the heart and minds of Africans is often framed as a choice between an ‘open, rules-based international order’ and China’s ‘raw power transactional pressure campaigns’.

Do people in Africa also see it that way? If not, why not?

Scholars Sanne van der Lugt and Stacey Links (both affiliated with the LeidenAsiaCentre) will provide insights into this ‘new scramble for Africa’. What is China’s Africa strategy? What should the EU’s or Dutch strategy on Africa focus on? What are the consequences of China’s growing influence on issues like the war in Ukraine, migration or climate?
