About Florian Schneider

DIRECTOR

Dr Florian Schneider is Leiden Asia Centre’s academic director.

Expertise

His research of the past 15 years has a.o. focused on political communication and media in contemporary China. His most recent project, ‘Digital Nationalism in China’, moved beyond traditional media and examined how nationalism works online, specifically how Sino-Japanese historiography is constructed through digital media. The book is available with Oxford University Press (2018).

Schneider’s research in the field of international relations has concentrated on PRC foreign policy under the Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping administrations. It has included analyses of Chinese relations with the US, the EU, North and South Korea, and Japan, as well as cross-straits relations. His work on political communication has featured into this work, allowing him to conceptualize China’s use of ‘soft power’, and the impact of so-called globalization processes on China.
