Flora Smit

Flora Smit is a PhD candidate at Leiden University whose research explores how K-pop idols, agencies and fans construct public identity. She previously earned a master’s at Seoul National University as a KGS scholar and teaches Korean language and culture at the HvA. Flora regularly speaks to media about K-pop and Korea’s entertainment industry.

About Flora Smit

Flora Smit is a PhD candidate at Leiden University, focusing on the dynamics within the K-pop industry. Her dissertation examines the relationships between K-pop idols, their agencies, and fandoms, specifically investigating the degree of control idols have over their public personas. 

As a recipient of the KGS scholarship, she earned a master’s degree from Seoul National University in South Korea. 

In addition to her academic pursuits, Flora Smit contributes to media discussions on K-pop and contemporary Korean society.
