LeidenAsiaCentre’s Ingrid d’Hooghe on Confucius Institutes in Europe
Ingrid d’Hooghe was interviewed by University World News on Confucius Institutes’ role inside European universities. In an article published on April 17th, she describes many universities in Europe as naïve as they do not realise Confucius Institutes are part of and are managed indirectly by the Chinese government and are not always run transparently. She does note that many Confucius Institutes “were established in Europe at a time when we did not look at China so critically and were still focusing on extending and deepening cooperation with China”.
