Brechtje Spreeuwers heeft een Master in zowel architectuur als sinologie. Momenteel is ze verantwoordelijk voor de Chinese projecten van MLA+, een internationaal architectuur, stedenbouw en strategisch ontwerpbureau. Als China-specialist en architect fungeert ze als schakel tussen Chinese opdrachtgevers en internationale ontwerpteams in Rotterdam, Londen, Sint Petersburg en Shanghai.

Focus
Als Fellow van het LeidenAsiaCentre zal Brechtje Spreeuwers zich tijdens haar onderzoek richten op stedelijke vernieuwing in Shenzhen, China. In de praktijk krijgt Brechtje steeds vaker vragen van lokale overheden en ontwerpbureaus in Shenzhen over de Nederlandse aanpak op het gebied van herontwikkeling van de bestaande stad. In haar onderzoek gaat ze daarom dieper in op zowel de Nederlandse als de Chinese praktijk om te kijken in welke vorm we mogelijk wat van elkaar kunnen leren. Het onderzoek resulteert naast een onderzoeksrapport, in een leidraad voor de Nederlandse industrie hoe we in kunnen spelen op deze specifieke vraag uit China.
Methode
Een overzicht van de huidige situatie op het gebied van herontwikkeling in Nederland (Rotterdam) wordt verkregen door bronnenonderzoek, aangevuld met interviews uit de praktijk. Aangezien bronnen over dit onderwerp nog schaars zijn in China, zal de situatieschets van Shenzhen ook sterk leunen op de praktijkervaring van Brechtje, gecombineerd met interviews met lokale actoren.

Brechtje Spreeuwers holds a degree in both architecture and sinology. Currently she is responsible for the Chinese projects within MLA+, an international architecture, planning and strategic consultancy firm. She is a China specialist and an architect and thus functions as the link between Chinese clients and international design teams in Rotterdam, London, St Petersburg and Shanghai.

Focus
As a fellow of the LeidenAsiaCentre, Brechtje Spreeuwers will focus her research on urban regeneration in Shenzhen, China. During her work in China for MLA+, Brechtje was increasingly asked to provide advice on urban regeneration based on the Dutch approach towards regeneration of the existing city. In her research she will therefore focus on the current markets of both the Netherlands as China to see what they can learn from each other. Next to a report, the research will also result in a practical guidebook for the Dutch Industry for a more successful approach to this market in China.
Method
Literature research complemented with interviews will provide an overview of the current situation with respect to re-development in the Netherlands (Rotterdam). Because sources about this topic are still limited in China, an outline of the situation in Shenzhen will draw heavily from Brechtje’s local practice, in combination with interviews with local actors.
