Indonesia is entering a period of major political change, as it prepares for the leadership transition from President Joko Widodo to the expected rise of Prabowo Subianto. This shift will have far-reaching effects, not just for Indonesia as Southeast Asia’s largest economy and the world’s third-largest democracy, but also for its role on the global stage.

Last February our Asia Academy looked at the election results with Leiden University scholars David Henley and Rizal Shidiq.

This time LeidenAsiaCentre is honoured to have Lambert Grijns in the house, the former Dutch Ambassador to Indonesia who recently returned from Jakarta. During his posting, Grijns – who speaks Bahasa Indonesia – gained unique insights on the political dynamics in Indonesia. He will analyze the implications of Prabowo’s leadership and the impact of Widodo’s departure. Furthermore, Grijns will offer his expert view on the long and evolving relationship between Indonesia and the Netherlands and will share differences in perspectives as to how the bilateral relationship is perceived.
