Laura de Groot

Laura de Groot is an Indonesianist and junior researcher at the Leiden Asia Centre, where she manages the Indonesia and ASEAN portfolio. She holds bachelor’s degrees in French Language and Culture and in South and Southeast Asian Studies, and completed a master’s degree in Southeast Asian Studies at Leiden University. Her academic and professional experience includes research on Indonesian citizenship and diaspora networks, an internship at the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague, and study at Universitas Gadjah Mada. She is fluent in Dutch, English, French, and Indonesian.

About Laura de Groot

Laura de Groot is an Indonesianist and junior researcher at the Leiden Asia Centre where she is responsible for the Indonesia and ASEAN portfolio. She holds a bachelor’s degree in French Language and Culture from the University of Amsterdam as well as a bachelor’s degree in South and Southeast Asian Studies from Leiden University. She is fluent in four languages: Dutch, English, French and Indonesian.

Laura graduated in January 2025 with a master’s degree in Southeast Asian Studies from Leiden University. In her master’s thesis, she analysed Indonesian (dual) citizenship policies and Indonesian diaspora networks worldwide. During her studies, she interned at the cultural and social department of the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague and spent 6 months studying at Universitas Gadjah Mada in Yogyakarta.

Laura is also active in the Intercountry Committee Netherlands-Indonesia of Rotary Club and works as a consular officer at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
