Dechun Zhang

Dechun Zhang is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen, where he studies the ethical and political implications of using IoT technologies for environmental monitoring as part of the ERC project GREENWATCH. His work examines digital politics, online participation and political communication, with a particular focus on China. Dechun holds a PhD from Leiden University and has held visiting positions in Copenhagen and Berlin. He also serves on several editorial boards and is Managing Editor of the Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia.

About Dechun Zhang

Dechun Zhang is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Tracking and Society in the Department of Communication at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. He is part of the ERC Advanced Grant project “GREENWATCH – Green Surveillance: Imagining a Sustainable Internet of Things,” where he examines the use of IoT technologies for environmental monitoring, with a focus on their ethical and political implications.

He currently serves as Managing Editor of the Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia, Editor at Asia Pacific Viewpoint, and Social Media Editor for the Journal of Visual Political Communication. Previously, he was a visiting researcher at the Nordic Institute of Asian Studies (NIAS) at the University of Copenhagen and a visiting scholar at the Institute for Media and Communication Studies at Freie Universität Berlin. His research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, edited volumes, and presented at international conferences, including in Journalism Practice and the International Journal of Communication, among others.
