‘Young Japanologist: The Next Generation’

This call for proposals is part of the Leiden Asia Centre project ‘Young Japanologist: The Next Generation’. This project, that is partly funded by the Isaac Alfred Ailion Foundation (IAAF), offers young professionals the opportunity to gain work experience in research on contemporary Japan. For a maximum period of 6 months (based on 1.0 fte), the Leiden Asia Centre provides a research position to a Junior Japan Researcher who wants to pursue a career as a scientific researcher of Modern Japan.

The goal of the project is to foster the next generation of talented researchers, who will increase the knowledge level and understanding in The Netherlands and Europe of developments in Japan.

Selection Criteria:

  • Graduated with a Master’s degree in Asian Studies (or another closely relevant field) with excellent results;
  • You are equipped to conduct research topics related to contemporary Japan, with societal or policy relevance. Previous experience is considered an asset, but not a requirement. These topics can be related to, for instance, Japanese politics, Japanese economic and industrial policy, or Japanese technological developments;
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and a working proficiency in Japanese are required;
  • Demonstrable ability to conduct research independently.

Research Proposal:

Candidates are free to pursue their own research project. However, there are some guidelines. A successful research proposal:

  • Is about (or has a demonstrable link with) contemporary Japan;
  • Is relevant to LAC’s key stakeholders: (local) government, business and/or media;
  • Needs to have clear link with Leiden Asia Centre’s core research themes, which guide our research agenda:
  1. Technology & Society – What is the real impact of emerging technologies, beyond the hype, on societies and governance?
  2. Climate & Energy – How do societies respond to the costs of environmental change, and what strategies emerge for sustainable futures?

We ask applicants to submit a short (maximum two pages) research proposal with their application. Your research proposal needs to at least contain the following elements:

  • Research question;
  • Conceptual and theoretical framework;
  • Preliminary schedule;
  • Intended deliverables (please see below);
  • A short paragraph explaining why you are equipped to conduct the proposed research project.

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • To conduct research in accordance with the proposal (subject to revision in consultation);
  • Regular meetings and feedback sessions with research supervisors to discuss progress;
  • Produce a final report and prepare for peer review;
  • Disseminate research findings through publications and presenting at public events;
  • Expand Leiden Asia Centre’s network of people, organisations and/or companies doing business with Japan(ese actors), based in The Netherlands and/or Europe (Brussels).

Deliverables

  • A research report (max. 7,000 words) including an executive summary, clear conclusions, and any recommendations for stakeholders.
  • Presentation of the research report to stakeholders.
  • A commitment to contribute to LAC’s Japan-focused activities (including networking) for a minimum of 25% of the total work time.

Terms and Conditions:

  • A salary in line with the standard rates for university researchers, based on their previous experience. This is a full-time position, requiring 40 hours per week. A pension plan and other secondary benefits are included; – A 6-month contract;
  • Throughout the project, senior researchers will offer regular feedback and guidance;
  • If – for whatever reason – the research paper is not completed within the 6-month period, the researcher is expected to continue working on the project until it is finished, including the final public presentation. However, LAC will not be able to compensate for any additional hours or costs incurred to complete the project.
