Professor Kasia Cwiertka is one of the three academic directors of the LeidenAsiaCentre. At Leiden University, she holds the Chair of Modern Japan Studies.
In 2016, Cwiertka will lead a new research project of the LeidenAsiaCentre on local applications of global trends.
At Leiden University, Cwiertka holds the Chair of Modern Japan Studies. Cwiertka is an established expert on food history of modern Japan and Korea, both as a domain of culture and as a window into historical inquiry that extends beyond the realm of cuisine and nutrition. In her research, food serves as a vehicle to talk about social change and global interconnectedness facilitated by colonialism, war, and cultural. In recent years, she was the editor of Food and War in Mid-Twentieth Century East Asia (Ashgate, 2013) and published on the international commodification of Korean cuisine (2014) and on neighbourhood association and food rationing in post-war Japan (2013).
